Innovative door project helps people living with dementia
Thanks to funding from the Friends of Resthaven Foundation, a simple but innovative new door system for residents living with dementia at the Resthaven on Burns care centre has transformed the hallways, giving residents a greater sense of home and comfort.
Resthaven on Burns provides rest home, continuing care and dementia care and is one of two care centres operated by Cambridge Resthaven.
The door into each resident’s room now has a made-to-measure decal that matches a ‘front door’ the resident remembers fondly from their past. This clever system helps people living with dementia to recognise and find their rooms, and the Resthaven team are noticing the doors are stimulating happy memories and helping residents feel at home.
What a success!
2021 saw an exciting collaboration with Cambridge High School’s Year 13 Extension 4 Class to raise money for a much-needed van for Resthaven. The project was an ambitious one – fundraising for a $70,000 van.
The students built a huge amount of goodwill in the Cambridge community, enthusing individuals and businesses to support their endeavours. It quickly became apparent how far-reaching the campaign was – students connected with high profile alumni in New Zealand and around the world, and the support flowed in, with phenomenal results.
For the students the project was not only about raising money. They were inspired by Resthaven’s unique business model as a not-for-profit charitable trust and connected with Resthaven through visits to the residents in the care centre, and an invitation for Resthaven residents to watch Cambridge High School’s annual production.
The campaign was highly successful, and sincere thanks go to C&R Developments, Challenge Cambridge and Jim Wright Nissan who were major contributors to the project. Other individuals, schools and companies donated generously to the project, and before long the dream was achieved and a brand new van was purchased for Resthaven residents to enjoy getting out and about. Thank you to everyone who supported the project and most of all thank you to the talented and hardworking EXT 4 Class 2021 at Cambridge High School.
It's Official!!
June 2021
Project ResthaVAN has begun.
All is now revealed! Cambridge High School's Extension 4 class 2021 have been flat out for months working behind the scenes on a fabulous community fundraising project. Anyone can be involved!
In the words of the Extension 4 team...
"The main focus of our campaign is to raise funds for a van for Resthaven Cambridge. Hence the name, ResthaVAN.
We have a heap of things planned! Such as a Bingo Night at Resthaven and the Extension 4 Showcase.
Be sure to keep posted on our social media to live the journey alongside us. Our planned events will lead up to our final, main event - a town wide dress-up day themed "Thrifty Fifties" - which will happen on Thursday 5th of August. Extension 4 will be asking help from the business of Cambridge, who we hope will kindly donate to our van fundraiser and get amongst the fun and joy, as we take Cambridge back in time. We also encourage the public to get amongst it.
However, our ambitions do not end there. Yes, we want to help the senior residents who may be needing help in mobility. But there's far more to it than that. To put it simply, our mission is to build a relationship that enriches the lives of Cambridge High School students and the residents of Resthaven Cambridge."

Second print run for Lockdown Book!
24 August 2020
It's only a couple of weeks since the Cambridge in Lockdown book was launched, but it's already onto its second print run. The Cambridge News wrote a great article featuring Eric Hill and the Cambridge in Lockdown book, and the books have been flying out the door at Paper Plus Cambridge.
People are loving the book - especially for those of us who couldn't get into town, it's amazing to see the photos of what town was like during the lockdown weeks. We've heard people are sending them off to friends and family overseas, and someone is putting together time capsules for their grandkids and popping the book into the time capsule.
To purchase the book, the cost is $32 and you can purchase:
- online at The Best Little Book Store website
- from Paper Plus Cambridge
- from the Cambridge iSITE,
- or contact Gaylene Callaghan 07 827 6097.
The Foundation is so grateful for the generous contribution Eric is making to the Foundation from every sale of the book. Thanks Eric!
We are so excited about this amazing project!
5 August 2020
For those of you who are familiar with our amazIng patron Eric Hill, you will know that he is a VERY talented photographer.
Eric is not one to sit still, so during lockdown he got on his bike (that's him in the photo) and got snap-happy. The result is a stunning photo book of Cambridge in Lockdown that has been launched this week.
Profits from book sales go to our Foundation - how great is that!
So if you want this book about our beautiful town during lockdown, you can purchase it online on The Best Little Book Store website or buy it from Paper Plus Cambridge or Cambridge iSITE, or contact Gaylene Callaghan 07 827 6097.
As you know, we are fundraising for a Therapeutic Bath for the Cambridge Resthaven Continuing Care facility which will allow for our very elderly residents to be gently lowered in for a warm relaxing soak instead of showering.
Fab Quiz Night - 31 July 2020
A fun night was had by all at Quiz Night - as the photos show!
The Quiz Team from Cambridge's Young Professionals group and Gaylene did an amazing job of organising the night.
The Beatles round was a hit with everyone, but all the teams came a cropper on the James Bond round!
The great news is the Foundation made around $1500 to go towards our latest fundraising project - a therapeutic bath.
